Duration 3 Years Full time, 6 semesters Course Overview
The first year introduces the students to computing as applicable to the Digital Media Industry. Students develop a practical understanding of the underlying principles of Digital Media industry including elements of design, typography, digital audio and video, animation, authoring and preparing project proposals. They also learn the various methods of acquiring, collating and evaluating digital media contents, the ability to communicate effectively in a professional manner and develop judgement on the various software and hardware used in the digital media industry. Through the Art module the students learn how to use the drawing processes and materials as a means of visual enquiry and self-expression. Students also learn the background on the major developments and issues that were instrumental in the development of the Digital Media Industry, the process of pre-production with emphasis on producing concept designs and storyboards and are also introduced to the basic concepts of a programming language and the development of structured algorithms to solve informally specified problems.
Year 2 builds upon the skills gained in year 1 and concentrates on studies relating to the theory and practice used in developing media rich, Interactive Digital content on diverse platforms such as Personal Computers, Game Consoles and Mobile phones. Students widen the scope of their visual research base by learning techniques of Direction, Cinematography, Acting, Claymation and Machinima. The 3D module gives a solid grounding in the essential core skills required to create and produce three dimensional computer work, including Modelling in 3D, Texturing, Lighting, Particles & Dynamics and Rendering techniques. They specialise in developing Art vital for computer games including Level design, Character design and Design Documents. The course progresses to developing In-game content using low-poly modelling, unwrapping and texturing for games, Rigging for game engines, collision models, implementing “ragdoll” physics support, creating vehicles and finally exporting to various formats and engines. They also develop understanding of the theories and practice of film editing and compositing.
Year 3 builds upon the individual skills that they have gained in the previous two years and will focus on their Project work. They also focus upon operational management through the business of Media; these modules develop business knowledge enabling them to manage projects and technology. Career Opportunities
