Duration 3 Years Full time, 6 semesters Course Overview
The first year introduces the students to computing as applicable to the Digital Media Industry. Students develop a practical understanding of the underlying principles of Digital Media industry including elements of design, typography, digital audio and video, animation, authoring and preparing project proposals. They also learn the various methods of acquiring, collating and evaluating digital media contents, the ability to communicate effectively in a professional manner and develop judgement on the various software and hardware used in the digital media industry. Through the Art module the students learn how to use the drawing processes and materials as a means of visual enquiry and self-expression. Students also learn the background on the major developments and issues that were instrumental in the development of the Digital Media Industry, the process of pre-production with emphasis on producing concept designs and storyboards and are also introduced to the basic concepts of a programming language and the development of structured algorithms to solve informally specified problems.
Year 2 builds upon the skills gained in year 1 and enables the student to develop a greater depth of knowledge and understanding about the requirements of the Visual Effects industry with special reference to creating professional looking composites. Students begin by learning traditional Film techniques such as Cinematography, Direction alongside creating Miniatures and Matte paintings that serve as background plates. Through their 3D module they learn to Model, Texture, and Light and generate natural meteorological phenomena using particle effects and simulate physical conditions through dynamics. The student are then exposed to the concepts and practice of matchmoving from simple perspective matching right through to camera and object tracking and finally learn to integrate live-action footage with computer generated imagery or other elements (such as miniatures or Matte painting) to create realistic environments. The live-action compositing techniques they master are Colour correction and colour matching, Wire and rig removal, Rotoscoping, Masking and Chroma-keying through blue screening and green screening.
Year 3 builds upon the individual skills that they have gained in the previous two years and will focus on their Project work. They also focus upon operational management through the business of Media; this module develops business knowledge enabling them to manage projects and technology. Career Opportunities
